How to Open the Curiosity Loop

I know this happens to you.

You go to a networking event or you meet somebody new and they ask you a very simple question, which is, “What do you do for a living?”….  and all of a sudden you feel unprepared!

It’s like what you do for a living has to fit into this tiny capsule and it seems that no matter how you answer this question. It never feels adequate and it certainly doesn't spark conversation.

These moments aren't about selling yourself. They are about peeking the Curiosity from those who are inquiring.

How can you answer that question in a way that will make that person who's asking want to know more?

The one thing you don't want to do is to answer them in a predictable way something like I sell insurance or I'm a nurse or I'm with a network marketing company and we sell essential oils.

That's pretty boring, right?!?

So instead you want to answer them in a way that opens a curiosity Loop. It piques your interest and make some curious what you want to do is to get them to say, “Oh really? Tell me more.”

And you can do this by stating the problem most of your clients and customers are facing and then share the product or solution you offer, and the results they get in the end.

You want to do this in a way that describes what you do, but doesn't give the whole enchilada away.

The goal is to open that Curiosity Loop.

Instead of saying I still insurance…. You might say something like, “I help people find peace of mind with documents that turn into gold when disaster strikes.”

That's pretty much what an insurance agency agent does, right?

That sounds so much better and it's going to make that person say “tell me more”

For my own business, I could tell people that I'm a journalist. I'm a writer. I'm a video producer but instead I might say something like this:

“I help women business owners who feels stuck and unable to properly communicate who they are build connections with their audience through the power of story.”

So hopefully that will make whoever's asking want to know more and ask me questions and then spark the conversation that more  fully describes what I do, who I help, and how I serve.

Give this a try today. You want to State the problem most of your clients or customers face and then share how what you offer or do makes a difference for them?

I want to give you a space to practice this as well and get some feedback from your peers. So how come over into the LIGHTbeamers Community on Facebook. That's our private free Facebook group and share your one-liner introduction with us. We'd love to support you as you navigate the world of sharing your story with others and give you a place to get some support in the process at the end of the day.
